Named in recognition of the Lenape people, the original inhabitants of the area, the Lenape Trail was founded in 1982 by Al Kent. Today this 36-mile trail connects 18 parks and reservations across 11 Essex County municipalities, and is enjoyed in early morning runs, casual evening walks, and by serious through-hikers and outdoors enthusiasts of all kinds. In this webinar we will give an overview of the Lenape trail, its history, the historic sites on its path, and the trail's continued evolution.

About the Instructors
Dave DeShazer
Dave lives just a few blocks from the Lenape trail, and almost immediately started enjoying the Lenape trail with his family when they moved to NJ five years ago. Dave serves as the volunteer maintainer, supervisor, and crew chief for the trail, working with dozens of volunteers (including his two young daughters) and organizations to make the Lenape trail a little better every year.
Debra Kagan
Debra worked on the revitalization of the trail as the Lenape Field Manager from 2017 to 2019 and helped create The Official Guide to the Lenape Trail. She is currently the new Executive Director of the New Jersey Bike & Walk Coalition and the former President of Bike&Walk Montclair. She considers it a gift to live only a few blocks from the trail and can be found walking along its path on most days.
